Closeting

Ahmad–a closeted gay Muslim man in Indonesia–finds out that his boyfriend has just passed away as he is about to celebrate his 25th birthday with his mother and close friends at home. Ahmad tries to get out of the house and deal with himself, but every single time, he is unable to do so as he has to keep pretending that everything is okay in front of them. As the day goes by, Ahmad finds it harder and harder to keep everything bottled up inside.

Director Statement

With Closeting, I want to showcase how in Indonesia, queer people aren't able to experience even the most basic emotions such as love or grief, and that, for me, is inhuman. As a queer man myself, this short is a love letter to my community, and I hope people from around the world would be able to see this; the queer people would see that they are not alone and the cis-heterosexual people would be encouraged to be a good ally.
