Private Project

Closely Guarded

A cynical cop and a naive wife fall in love while running from a sociopath with orders to kill them for the evidence they have of a medical hazard cover-up.

A husband hires a guy in a bar to kill his wife. The dumbster has made the deal with an undercover cop. The cynical cop, VINCE, convinces the guy's naive wife, KAREN, to be made up to look gunshot for pics he'll show Hubby at the payoff. During the makeup application, Vince and Karen give off sparks as she unburdens herself of all her pent up emotions over the empty marriage.

Meanwhile, Hubby approaches a powerfully dangerous man for hush money, thinking he's got him outsmarted. He has a copy of a certain file the Exec thought had ceased to exist. Exec agrees to pay and Hubby goes to fetch the file.

However, on the way he stops at the bar to pay off Vince and gets arrested. Exec's assistant, BURN, a sociopath, arranges Hubby's release and takes him away for interrogation, via car battery.

Karen blames Vince for Hubby's release. He goes to her place to apologize and foils Burn's attempt to steal a safety-deposit-box key. It is their first violent encounter. Burn does not get the key but Vince gets badly battered.

Suspecting something sinister, Vince whisks Karen into hiding then confronts his Boss secretly at an indoor driving range and learns that pressure from above has rendered the pair officially friendless.

At the bank they find a thumb drive in the box, but are discovered by Burn who has the traumatized Hubby in tow. During their cat-and-mouse escape, Hubby gets away from Burn.

The ensuing chase through the building and onto a subway platform leaves Hubby dead and Vince and Karen on the run.

The pair hide out at a friend of Karen's, believing themselves safe in a gated community. They discuss the situation, both personal and professional and print out the disc files but before they can read them, Burn comes for them. During their desperate escape driving through the backyards of the suburban landscape Vince is wounded and disarmed.

They take refuge in an isolated cabin where Karen treats Vince's wound. She prepares homemade defences under Vince's guidance while learning about his tortured past. They read print-outs of the files and discover the danger but to spread the word they have to get to higher ground for a signal.

Burn and 2 cohorts jump them at the cabin but the couple escape across the water leaving the cabin ablaze and the 2 cohorts incapacitated. They steal a speedboat and race for higher ground.

A boat chase leads to a climactic fight between Burn and Vince at a closed-for-the-season lift-lock.

Writer Biography - J. Aldric Gaudet

My professional writing credits include TV Documentaries, “Struggle Beneath the Sea,” and Episodic Dramas, “The Littlest Hobo.”

“Baltic Storm” a FF came from a producer’s outline based upon real events. Released 2003.

“Anatomy of a Hijacking” a FF suspense thriller commissioned to be based on eyewitness accounts. In development.

“Error-2000" was a TVM rewrite polish. Aired 1999.

My screenplay, "The Hijacking of Studio 4," was a TVM produced by a Canadian producer who would make Roger Corman blush. I got to direct it, but first I had to produce and direct another TVMovie with less than a shoestring budget and a screenplay that needed work. That was released as “Deadly Pursuit” aka “The Commando Game.”

I thrive when working with other creatives whether on my projects or theirs.

MEDIA LITERACY

The more one understands how media is used to manipulate emotions, the less one is vulnerable to corporate propaganda.

I taught screenwriting and the filmmaking process through courses for McMaster University and the Factory Media Centre.

My award winning short “Pit & Pendulum” was an experiment of technique. Using Poe’s words to stimulate the viewer’s imagination around the minimalistic images seen on screen. Its simplicity demonstrated the power of cinema at its most basic.

I create the kind of stories I like to see. Enlightened entertainment.
I create in Hamilton, Ontario, the perfect film location.
Gaudet is Latin for “be happy.”
