Director Statement

This film is deeply personal for me and my co-writer, as we both share strong connections to immigrant experiences. I immigrated from Brazil, and my co-writer is Korean American, the daughter of immigrants. Each of us has been haunted by numerous “what ifs,” including one we share profoundly—the passion to become filmmakers.

The personal connection extends even further. My wife, who is half-Japanese, and I own a dry-cleaning business, an intimate setting that serves as the vehicle for our story.

I’ve always been fascinated by sci-fi, magical realism, and time travel, genres uniquely capable of exploring the profound consequences of our choices. At age 50, finally stepping into filmmaking is itself the realization of one dream among many previously unfulfilled.

Ultimately, we all carry unrealized dreams. Creating this film allowed me to explore what happens when we glimpse alternate lives offered by paths not taken. My greatest hope is that viewers leave inspired to move beyond wondering “what if” and start embracing “what’s next.”
