Clayoquot Sound

Clayoquot Sound is a compelling short documentary exploring Ian Wallace's pivotal work that reflects on the historic protests and the largest act of civil disobedience to protect the ancient and pristine rainforests of Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island in the summer of 1993. The film delves into Wallace’s innovative artistic process, where he merges photographic images of the environmental protests with abstract fields of color inspired by monoprints of plywood—symbolizing the material at the heart of the logging conflict. Through nine photolaminated canvases, Wallace captures the tension between nature, industry, and activism, marking a transformative moment in his artistic journey. A collective and collaborative work with Pia Massie and Time Travellers Testimony.

Director Statement

As an auteur filmmaker and visual artist, I explore the delicate balance between surface appearances and the hidden emotional realities of everyday life. My work delves into the tension between what is seen and what is felt, revealing nuanced layers of human experience through visual storytelling.
My recent short films and video works present a panoramic view of contemporary experimental cinema, where movement—both physical and emotional—plays a central role. I am particularly
interested in the intersection of abstraction and narrative, using experimental forms to challenge conventional storytelling while maintaining a sense of structure and meaning.
Through a fusion of poetic imagery, dynamic motion, and evocative sound design, my films seek to engage audiences on both a sensory and introspective level. Whether through fragmented narratives or purely visual compositions, my work is an ongoing exploration of cinematic language, inviting viewers to experience time, space, and emotion in new and unexpected ways.
