Citizen Soldier

Sentaro Omoto immigrated from Japan to Canada seeking a better life and future. It was the early 1900’s and anti-Japanese laws passed by the British Columbia government made life difficult and dangerous. He was destitute and lonely when Great Britain entered WWI. Like many Japanese, he saw his opportunity to prove his loyalty and in return he hoped for a better life. This is the journey of Sentaro Omoto and his fellow Japanese from life as struggling immigrants to the front lines of France. He would witness the horrors of trench warfare, the ravages of disease, the exposure to gas and experience man’s inhumanity to one another. WWI was known as the war to end all wars by way of attrition and annihilation. Somehow Sentaro Omoto survived the hell while others did not.

“Citizen Soldier”, her 5th film took 5 years to complete with the help of her editor Joe Akira. Hopefully the duo will continue to create projects that preserve stories on the history of the Japanese diaspora who laid the foundations for current and future generations.
