Kayla Foisy (she/her) is a recent graduate from media and communications at Western University and previous culture editor at the Western Gazette, consistently enjoying the process of writing and creation in all capacities.
Beyond the school newspaper, Kayla also has bylines reviewing theatre for intermission magazine and formatting student profiles for TELUS’ Friendly Future Foundation grant recipients. She is also a two-time playwright of Theatre Western, the university's foremost theatre provider.
With experience in both long-form and commercial production, her most recent work brought her to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she acted as the associate producer on the upcoming feature film, Ancestral Beasts. Taking part in the pre-production stages, Kayla assisted in casting, editing the script and managing deadlines, grant proposals and tagging reports. On-set, Kayla directed cast and crew interviews and has edited them into her own mini documentary titled “The Light Throughout the Tunnel: Indigenous Storytelling in Ancestral Beasts” to be used in promotion. In commercial production, Kayla has been a production assistant on various jobs like Panda Express, Spec Savers, Tubi, Instagram, Manscaped for the Super Bowl and most recently, a couple of music videos for Drake’s new album, Iceman.
Of her own work, Kayla recently wrapped her first short film which she wrote, directed, and produced, Cherry, a concrete proof of her pride in the arts.
Based in Toronto, Kayla is entranced by theatre, writing, and film and excited to pursue a career blending journalism and media production.
I wrote Cherry in my second year of university, often discouraged by feedback from harsh creatives and fear of a diminishing creative future. The script was supposed to be an experiment in writing my first script that wasn’t autobiographical — little did I know how personal it would turn out. I believe it is necessary to purse dreams, take interest in art, and look for beauty in whatever form appeals to your eye. While following a dream will always involve struggle, Cherry is about finding purpose in your passion, and the film will make you believe the imagery can be about anyone.
