Chekhov.Offstage

A hard-of-hearing guide conducts a personal tour of the backstage of the legendary Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre for a deaf teenager boy. The guide’s mission is to awaken the boy’s creative powers and to show that the theatrical community can offer something to people like him.

The boy is fascinated by the innovative approach of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, who were the inspiring force behind the Moscow Art Theatre and who transformed the idea of scenic art around the world.

The boy gets immersed in the history of the theatre and its day-to-day business. He finds himself where only a chosen few can be: the cosmic upper gallery and the mysterious vault under the main stage. He learns about multiple theatrical professions as he visits the makeup shop, the art and production shop and the machinery shop, as if trying everything on for himself.
The tour, designed by the guide as a kind of game, is a real adventure and a milestone in the life of the deaf boy.

P.S. The documentary is in Sign Language with subtitles in English language and voiced by deaf and hard of hearing actor. Our film is not about deaf people. Our film is for everybody.
