Since I was a child, my family began taking me to visit towns along both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. When the Obama administration began stepping-up efforts to detain and deport undocumented immigrants, I began hearing stories about large numbers of homeless deportees getting stuck in Mexican border towns. This is the story of how activist Sergio Tamai transformed an abandoned building in Mexicali into a shelter for deported and homeless people.
