Captives

Marcus and Nia accept an invitation to dine with Nat, Marcus’s estranged friend, and his wife, Elaina. What begins as a friendly reunion quickly turns tense as buried secrets and unspoken grievances come to light. Against the backdrop of current societal issues, personal betrayals, and emotional revelations, the four grapple with the complexities of relationships and identity. Confined within the house, with a radicalized gunman outside, their night turns into a harrowing exploration of truth, trust, and survival.

Director Statement

Captives is a SAG micro budget film, self funded, and shot in one location. I am a film worker of over 20 years, and like everyone else, I went to film school to make my own films. A career in lighting and cinematography later, I knew the strike was coming, and I had to finally make a movie myself. So in six weeks, I wrote one I could afford, and shot it four months later. A direct response to being ostracized by a friend for my views.

America is divided, words have been weaponized and truths have been blurred. As sides are taken, rights and liberties are lost and we take a step back. What are the cost of our actions? What happens when the radicalized are emboldened and fires are stoked? As divisive rhetoric has become the norm, too many of us have let our ideological views takeover, and put a fork in the ground. We are all flawed, yet quick to assume ourselves into an awkward situation. I hope the struggles and choices of these characters provide reflection at a time we all should be looking in the mirror. Have we been accountable?
