Director and editor, Alberto A. Torres is a Central Washington University graduate with a fondness for mood: the emotional response an image evokes with movement, color, texture, and the soundscape accompanying it like music and ambience. Their major influences stylistically comes from German Expressionism, ‘70s New Hollywood, and surrealism. Alberto strives for their work to be truthful and vulnerable, to speak what they can’t always say.
Alberto has an academic and life-long background as an illustrator which they have utilized frequently for storyboarding, concept art, and poster design for many films. An extensive interest in music makes up another major aspect of their artistry which often leads to in-depth participation in the process of creating music for film. With their best friend in tow, Harrison Scott Ferguson, Alberto continues to seek new opportunities to grow as an artist and person.
“I was afraid of myself. Afraid to live honestly and openly. I couldn’t speak my truth. I couldn’t even put it into writing. But I could be real through sight and sound. ‘Cambio’ came about as a way to express the frustration and fear I had with my living situation at the time. I wasn’t out to anyone in my family or even anyone that I knew in-person. I was tired of depriving myself of a life I deserved, so this film was my outlet to show people who I really was both as a human being and an artist.
I was really into German Expressionism at the time, as well as taking my first steps into the world of mood pieces and surrealism. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, THX 1138, Los Olvidados, and Ivan’s Childhood were my bibles for what I wanted to do with this film. And while that evolved greatly over the many years it took to get Cambio made, what I learned from those films stuck with me. COVID-19 struck right as pre-production started so I, and every other student, had to shelve our capstone projects. But even with such a tragedy, I refused to let the film go. This was my story and I had to get it made.
The intersectionality of queerness and Latin American culture is not one I saw very often. But films like Moonlight showed me that it was possible to shine a light on queer folk who weren’t always seen in mainstream media. I don’t know who will see the film but if just another person feels seen from watching this, then I know I’ve made something worthwhile. This was a very difficult film to bring to life and one that really tested everyone involved. A lot of lessons were learned and hopefully this functions as a jumping off point for the next step in my evolution as an artist. Cause just like our main character, Lux, I refuse to remain stagnant. I have to create.”
