Calling Card
During the purgatory between the funeral and reception of their close friend’s funeral, Mason and Keria try to balance the weight of their grief with the sweet nostalgia of remembering their friend. Through clouds of choked smoke, laughs and tears, their conversation is continually interrupted by mourning funeral goers and even a suspicious priest. They spend this awkward closeness together by reminiscing while also searching for a sign that their friend hasn’t really left them. No ones ever really gone, are they?

Annabelle Miller is an emerging filmmaker originally from Mulubinba (Newcastle, Australia). She has an interest in exploring the mundane; weaving everyday moments into stories that offer deep insight into human nature through her filmmaking practice. With a focus on dialogue and relationship, she shapes her writing and directing as ways to reflect the people around her, often drawing from conversations shared with friends or overheard by strangers.
Her debut short film, “Calling Card” explores a lighthearted moment between two friends in the midst of crippling grief. Annabelle is currently creating and studying in Warrane (Sydney, Australia).
“Calling Card” is a manifestation of grief and love, and the awkwardness that lies between. Capturing a moment at their mutual friend's funeral, two friends Kiera and Mason bond and reminisce over their friend’s life while simultaneously trying to look for a sign that their friend is still with them. They spend the purgatory of the funeral laughing and smoking while constantly being interrupted by mourners and even the scornful gaze of a priest. Little do they realise, their friend may have been sending them a sign all along.
"Calling Card" explores a different side to the process of grief, not afraid to lean into the awkward, and sometimes comedic, range of emotion felt when dealing with tragedy. Sometimes life is so terrible, all we can do is laugh.
