Director Statement

As a 30-year-old woman of Polish descent, I'm enthralled with the political and social issues that underlie the abortion rights crisis in Poland.

I interviewed Polish women from different backgrounds and regions of the country about their emotions and experiences with their own medical abortions. For many, it was the first time they had ever shared these stories. It was a humbling process developing a project that speaks on behalf of many through the voice of one, while still emphasizing that each experience is unique to the individual.

The unfortunate political parallel with the current situation in the US (my home country) has given the project a new level of importance, but it also has personal significance as it explores my fascination with motherhood, a consistent motif in my work.

Ultimately CZWARTEK is an amalgamation of the themes that inspire me most — the stories of everyday women, the complexities that exist within motherhood, and the ways in which our innermost conflicts manifest/externalize in our daily lives.
