COMBAT CLUB
Kyle Decker, a pizza-delivering, millennial gamer, finds the discipline he needs in the world of mixed martial arts. But as the going gets tough, he gets going, quitting on MMA like most everything he’s attempted in life. Gym owner Rodney Brewer lures him back into training, a decision that will test Kyle’s character, and his chin. With Rodney’s help, Kyle is introduced to the mentor he needs, and doesn’t deserve, former light-heavyweight champion and UFC Hall-Of-Famer, “Suga” Rashad Evans. But when the stakes are raised, will Kyle fight or fly?

The COMBAT CLUB show emerged from years of shooting with professional mixed martial arts fighters at top tier MMA facilities. In 2017 while documenting light-heavyweight contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson preparing for his UFC world championship bout, I entered the Combat Club gym for the first time. Florida daylight poured through a bank of windows onto the mats full of male and female boxers, wrestlers, kickboxers, jiu-jitsu practitioners, and a colorful mix of characters including children and small dogs. Such a smile-inducing scene amidst hard core physicality inspired me to create a scripted show that reflects the lighthearted side of MMA.
Anthony Johnson lost his bid for the UFC championship, but along the way I became friends with he and Rodney Brewer, Anthony’s coach and owner of Combat Club. Rodney’s intimidating appearance was contrasted by a playful, childlike demeanor; a goofy burly man. He would be the central character around whom the show revolves. The goal was to create a humorous, yet authentic show about the world of mixed martial arts. Each episode will focus on one character, and their personal motivations for training at the gym. Stories abound at Combat Club, where real-life professional fighters, ordinary folk, and occasional nut jobs train side-by-side. This is the sweaty, flipside universe of COMBAT CLUB.
