As a creative individual, I have always being excited by the chemistry in human relationships. Words like marriage, suspicion, love interest, infidelity have always piqued my curiosity. I try looking at these points both objectively and subjectively.
I feel that many marriages end in a tragic way, when one starts searching for some extra happiness outside his or her world, while in reality that happiness may exist within their world only. Trust is the basic thing without which even couples living under the same roof become estranged from each other. Moreover, when communication becomes threadbare, is when mistrust and suspicion creeps in, which when harbored can lead to disastrous consequences.
Anybody could have taken up this story. I have consciously chosen to underline this issue as I really feel that this is one of the major causes of dissent and breakups among married couples. I have tried to send a strong message by fabricating an extreme consequence.
Paintings of Edward Hopper always intrigued me a lot, and the hidden power of his paintings acted as a seed that was planted in my soul, and which inspired me to delve deeper and look towards cinema as a means of communication to express myself on this topic.
Post finalization of the concept, during screenplay, I was very excited to see the potential of creating some stunning visuals on screen. I realized that the look and feel would be better if shot in black and white, as ‘the grays’ are already there in the story - the disparity between both the characters mental setup is extremely high, just like the colors black and white.
Background score has been planned in such a manner that it acts as a silent narrator, plodding the plot forward. We kept cinematography and editing as simple as possible. In contrast to the heavy emotional movement of the characters, deliberately their on-screen movement is kept at a slow and languid pace so that it gives them the space to realign their thoughts, and the audiences the curiosity to keep them hooked until the very last frame.
I hope that audiences everywhere will relate to the strong message in the film positively and appreciate its core value. I want it to make my audiences think deeply about the issue and recognize how invaluable it is for a successful married life.
