LES CHAÎNES DU TEMPS

Comment être libre ? Trois générations se posent cette question : ceux qui n’ont jamais pris conscience de leurs privilèges et qui se retrouvent perdus, ceux qui ne savent pas encore quoi faire de leur liberté nouvellement acquise et entre les deux, ceux qui espèrent la venue des temps libérés des chaînes de la servitude en toutes ses formes. Or, la tempête de l’Histoire s’entend au loin, dans une Russie au temps de la première performance de La Cerisaie de Tchekhov.

Les cerisiers sont les témoins et les victimes de l’effacement des repères pour les anciens propriétaires comme pour les nouveaux, qui finissent par partir vers un avenir incertain.

Les saisons se confondent elles aussi, autour des arbres agités par les vents de l’Histoire.

La mesure du temps est donnée par le coucou, arrivé avec le printemps et parti avant l’arrivée de l’automne. Son chant accompagne le travail dans les champs de la brigade du kolkhoz, chant qui recommence sans cesse à compter les âges . Le coucou ne construira jamais son nid, mais va occuper le nid d’autres oiseaux qui vont devoir élever ses petits jusqu’à l’envol.

Et tout recommence, en entendant l’appel à une autre vie, d’une liberté lointaine.

THE CHAINS OF TIME

How to be free? Three generations ask themselves this question: those who have never been aware of the privileges they had and now find themselves lost, those who do not yet know what to do with their newly acquired freedom, and between them, those who hope for the arrival of a time free from the chains of servitude in all its forms. Meanwhile, the storm of History can be heard in the distance, in the Russia of the times when the first performance of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard took place.
The cherry trees are both witnesses and victims of the loss of the points of reference for the old and new owners, who ultimately depart towards an uncertain future.

The seasons merge into one another too, around the trees buffeted by the winds of History.
Time is measured by the cuckoo, that arrives with the Spring and leaves before the Autumn. Its call accompanies the work of the kolkhoz brigade in the fields, a song which endlessly begins to count the ages. The cuckoo will not build its own nest, but will occupy the nests of other birds, who will have to raise its young until they are ready to fly away.
And everything begins again, hearing the call to another life, to a distant freedom.

Director Biography - Ron Kenley

Trained as an architect with a long career in teaching, he has been creating multi-media and videos since 1998. Started with visual works as film analysis (2001-2003). Over the years, he developed the capacity for handling all the aspects of filmmaking more or less single-handed. This resulted in a diverse and independent work of various lengths and subjects.

Director Statement

Des cerisiers à 1000 m d’altitude dans le jardin d’une villa sur la côte de la montagne. Les photos d’une mise en scène de La Cerisaie de Tchekhov par le théâtre où elle a été jouée pour la première fois, 54 années auparavant. Le film opère un déplacement pour montrer des saisons différentes, attrapées dans les branches des cerisiers. Du chant rythmique du coucou aux arbres secoués par la tempête, les tableaux s’enchaînent, des tonalités différentes. Et la voix se multiplie, répète des phrases, brisant la linéarité de la lecture.

The film changes location to show different seasons, caught in the branches of the cherry trees. From the rhythmic song of the cuckoo to the trees shaken by the storm, the scenes follow one another, each with a different tone. And the voice multiplies, repeats phrases, breaking the linearity of the reading.
