Experiencing Interruptions?

COMMITTED

During the Lavender Scare, government files were created to track individuals deemed to have “weak morals.” Lists were made. Suspected gays were on those lists. Black and Native Americans were on those lists. Intellectuals. Feminists. This family was on those lists.

A family's matriarch is hunted down by an underground government unit the night of their son's Birthday party, exposing her family to more than her perpetrators bargained for.

Committed is the story of one American family simply trying to exist at a time in America that doesn't look to different from today.

Director Statement

"I wanted to take on the role of director for this short film because I was moved by the story of a family trying to live in peace during the Lavender Scare. As a queer woman myself, it was important to me to learn more about this era and to explore the emotional fabric of what it means to be the target of a cruel policy, while trying to live authentically in the arms of a chosen community. I thought deeply about the questions that live within these characters : Can we choose our families? Where do we turn to find safety and authenticity? How far are we willing to go to protect the ones we love? It was very humbling for me to consider these questions at all, let alone within the context of the Lavender Scare, an historical period in America that posed a grave danger for the queer community. As a filmmaker, exploring this story was a compelling opportunity to collaborate with Lisa and Shaan, artists who inspired a creative path in giving voice to these characters. I'm deeply moved by their passion and grateful to contribute to their vision."
