Director Biography - Larz Luecht

Larz Luecht is a Wisconsin-based filmmaker, musician, photographer, and painter, whose works explore themes such as abstraction, depression, paranoia, and identity. Through the expressions of identity and personal writing of musicians David Bowie and Kendrick Lamar to boundary-pushing filmmakers and visual artists Christopher Nolan and Andy Warhol, Larz uses visual media and music as a lens to understand the world. He explores the experiences we refuse to confront, acknowledging that to make society better, we must first look at ourselves. Through his work, Luecht pushes himself into new areas that invite contemplation and connection to an increasingly chaotic world.

Director Statement

I directed this film after going through a low period in my life, trying to figure out who I was. The process of filming and producing But, I Want You was the most difficult experience I've had as an artist. Trying to direct something for audiences to see, while being vivid about my life, and using the art of filmmaking to put all my thought and emotions into it, like a painter laying down paint on canvas. This work gave me the inspiration to make something that forced me to confront the darkest parts of my mind that I have often ignored, as well as to hopefully inspire other filmmakers to dedicate themselves to what they make, and be genuine with every work. I felt that by exploring the process of confronting my flaws and past experiences, I can express a bigger message, that to make the world better, one must look at themselves, and recognize that their flaws may be hurting their progress in life.
