BURNT BREAD

‘Burnt Bread’ follows the story of Deon, who returns to his estranged friend's home after years of absence.
As memories blur and tension simmers, Deon finds himself trapped in a surreal loop of past mistakes, emotional confrontations, and unsettling realisations. As the lines between reality and his fractured mind collapse, he faces the painful truth of his abandonment, and the haunting consequences of never being able to move on, stuck in a bardo state.

Director Statement

I wrote this story when I was unknowingly trying to disconnect from reality, something I think I really wove into the character of Deon. His tendency to escape into a performance, and his inability to confront the past. The title itself is a contradiction, it’s a cry for authenticity in a life that is ruled by his own denial. Deon’s identity is layered with guilt, repression, and a constructed reality he created. The film is a psychological unpacking of those layers to me, and it’s an attempt of a rebirth and a journey through the state of Bardo.
In its broader sense, this film comes from the image of a failed attempt to reconnect with God, constantly burning the bread, thus constantly burning the bridge. It reflects Deon’s struggle with faith and surrender, not in the sense of submitting to a higher power, but in finding his own rhythm. His life, with all its flaws and choices, is his true path. Nothing could have been different, and whatever comes, is what is always intended. This film in its essence is about learning to surrender.
