Buoyancy - A Surf Story From Taiwan
Buoyancy - A Surf Story From Taiwan
On Taiwan’s remote east coast, Apoo Lee runs Buoyancy Board Store - a small, alternative surf shop built on craft, community, and the stoke for Taiwan’s ever-changing waves.
At a time when surfing feels oversaturated, Apoo’s world is a reminder of what it’s really about - a life shaped by the ocean and the people who share it.
Through his lens, we glimpse Taiwan’s thriving alt-surf scene, from local shaper Anthony to visiting surfers and shapers redefining the way lines are drawn here.
"Apoo is an absolute legend! It’s a joy to shine a small spotlight on him. Taiwan is a country under pressure, but the people I meet here just want to be free - to chase waves and see where the ocean takes them. Those are the stories I gravitate towards, the ones I want to tell."
- Director & Filmmaker: Jonathan Strömberg “Jonis Strom”
As Apoo Lee puts it:
"We’re just trying to bring more beauty into surfing."
Because in the end, what more do you really need?
A few sick boards, fun waves and good friends.
And your family, Choya and Mumu (The star of the movie) filming your best one from the beach.

Jonathan Strömberg (or Jonis Strom as his friends call him) is a director, filmmaker, and surfer from the west coast of Sweden. With a strong sense of direction and a deep passion for his craft, he’s clear about what he wants to achieve in life. He’s the creator of documentaries like Arctic January - an award-winning surf film from Lofoten - and is always ready to dive into any project if it means connecting with local culture and catching a few waves along the way.
As a fully self-funded project, this feels like an important story to tell. Especially in today’s climate, I want to put a face to the surfers living in Taiwan and invite you into their lives, if only for a brief moment, but a moment that hopfuly makes an big impact.
