Vaiva Dirgėlaitė, a filmmaker originally from Lithuania and currently residing in Manchester, UK. She has recently graduated from the London Film Academy with First-Degree Honours. Despite commencing on her filmmaker journey at the age of twenty, Vaiva has already accumulated numerous credits as a first assistant director, writer, and director during her university years. In her directorial festival debut, “Bucket’s List”, she showcases her developing directorial style. In the future Vaiva aspires to continue telling character-driven stories with elements of surrealism and unreliable narrators.
At its core the film is about the fear of failure and how that exact fear affects us.
During the preparation period the writer, Ronnie Bond, and I worked closely to tweak the story to be more than about a woman with a dream and more about the journey of a woman fighting tooth and nail for something she finds important to her life’s fulfilment. The film is a tool of reflection for the audience as much as it is entertainment.
We, the filmmakers, have the duty to entertain. However, I wanted to stay respectful towards the main character, Millie Bucket, and her journey - rather than laugh at her failures, I wanted to go on this adventure with her. When she is excited, we see the quick cuts and the quick tempo. When she is sad, we see the colour change and we see Millie up close and personal. When she is in her fantasy world we join her side with the help of the music, montages, and a changed aspect ratio. We never leave her, we do everything she does and we feel everything she does as well.
This was the first film with a budget that I directed. The pressure of which forced me to keep my head down, stay humble, and truly explore Millie’s world. What do I know about what she is going through? Where have I seen it? Have I been there too?
I reached the conclusion that Millie’s story weaves its way into everyone’s hearts. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you reflect, and it makes you resonate. At least that’s what I hope for.
