Broken Wings

Broken wings is a unique documentary-music film that unveils the untold story of bird poaching in Southeast Asia. Forests are emptied on a massive scale, threatening more than 1,500 bird species with extinction. Yet almost nobody knows about it.

The film captures the journey tropical birds make from forest to cage, revealing how caging wild birds has become a massive industry that silences forests worldwide. With this project we lift the veil on this illegal trade and drive towards positive change.

Made with Ludovico Enauldi, this unique music documentary tells this untold story. Together we can stop the caging of these precious birds.

Director Statement

Our world’s ecosystems and wildlife are in crisis. We are losing our last remaining wild frontiers and the species that call it home at unprecedented rates. The keeping of exotic pets has been normalized globally. So much so, that we don’t consider a bird in a cage to be anything else but a regular pet. After all, we keep birds in cages because we love them, we love to look at them and to hear them sing. But what is lost is the fact that many of these pets are caught in the wild and the demand has turned into a global industry threatening bird species worldwide. Our forests need their bird populations to be healthy and plentiful. Without them there is no insect control or seed pollination and forests cannot thrive. This film hopes to educate audiences that a bird in a cage isn’t a mere cute pet, it is a family destroyed, a life robbed of freedom and an ecosystem put under threat. Behind every bird in a cage is a great story, this film tells the story of one. We hope that it inspires people around the world to reconsider getting another pet bird, or to educate themselves and their friends and family on the consequences of bird keeping. After all, if we really love our birds, we would want them to be free and flying, to do what they were born to do.
