Director Biography - Haldean Brown

Haldean grew up on a farm in Ohio before moving to Antwerp, Belgium as a photography-obsessed pre-teen. He came back to the US to study Theater and Computer Animation in New York City, and worked various technical and creative roles in (off-)off-Broadway theaters before moving to San Francisco and working in the tech industry for almost a decade. Now he is an Oakland-based film director and a computer programmer at Pixar, and is particularly excited by stories about people's relationships to nature and the way technology both gathers and isolates us.

Director Statement

Break, Break is the product of our shared experience of social isolation. The main character is grappling with a question we've all been forced to answer for ourselves through the pandemic: how much are we willing to give up, and for how long, for the guarantee of safety? Sarah, my co-producer and the writer of this film, lived a similar experience to the main character of the film as a single woman living alone in New York during the pandemic. As a director, I was excited to explore the intimacy of that loneliness through photography, and to juxtapose that darkness with the beauty of Northern California.

This is my first time directing outside of a student production, and I am very proud of how it came together. Thank you so much for your consideration, and I hope you enjoy the movie!
