Brainchild
Dive deep into the world of lucid dreams where the line between reality and imagination begins to melt away. Director and dreamer Jason Conyers sets out to discover the significance of his vivid nightly dreams. Through the film, he poses questions about what the recurring images in his dreams might be trying to tell him, and what it means to walk between consciousness and sleep in lucid dreaming. Searching for some kind of catharsis or enlightenment, Jason, with the help of Liz, a talented visual artist and dream guide, exposes his most personal and terrifying dreams to be brought into reality on paper and on screen. Brainchild dissects the nature of documentary filmmaking by turning a compelling topic into a first-hand encounter. Experience being transported into the twisted reality of your own dreamscape, and wonder if you’ll ever be able to find your way back to the waking world.

Navy Veteran Jason Conyers is a writer and filmmaker in Wilmington, NC. He has a travel documentary series called A Little Sense of Adventure where you live vicariously through him in a film essay format. The show's goal is to inspire people to travel outside of their comfort zones while traversing the world. He is a Film Studies Alumni from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and has worked as a gaffer, grip, and camera assist on six MFA student films at UNCW, and worked as a gaffer on UNCW's Flicker Film Society production "Into the Mouth of the Wolf".
This project was originally not intended to be personal. My crew and I had bigger plans to add more subjects other than myself to speak about dreams and their meaning with professionals in dream interpretation and psychology. This experimental documentary turned into a reflexive one, and in the time allowed with our crazy semester I could not be more proud of the work we achieved in such a short time. I am humbled to work with such a talented team of young filmmakers and I could not have done this without their patience, understanding, adaptability, creativity, and raw talent. Our film went through many changes and since our film is part experimental, it was difficult having and knowing that we wouldn't know how it would develop as we filmed. I learned to place my utmost trust in my team and we thrived on equal creativity and input. So to my amazing team, Brett Dunlap, Wil Fell, and Haley Mellon, thank you for an incredible experience. I hope you are all just as proud of this film as I am. And to Liz Harts, thank you for your enthusiasm and artistry on and off the camera.
