Nominee: Best Female Filmmaker
Kelsey Edwards is an American actress, filmmaker and musician with more than two decades of experience in the entertainment industry. She is best known for starring in the internationally loved film "Minor Details" and for playing the savvy young mom in Jim Cummings' horror-comedy, "The Wolf of Snow Hollow."
Across social media Kelsey is as known as "the internet big sis" and her primary goal is to help girls develop self-love and confidence.
Making her directorial debut with "Box Boy," Kelsey aims to tell powerful, visually engaging stories that inspire, educate and uplift.
Box Boy feels like a weird slice of life film because it is, in many ways, about a very weird slice of my life.
Being born and raised a very devout Mormon, I always felt restricted and confined. I felt the expectation to live a certain way, and that doing otherwise would come at the cost of disappointing God and those around me.
The weight of perfectionism was heavy, and it wasn't until a European backpacking trip in 2017 that I had my own personal Flower Girl moment. I met people while traveling who opened my eyes, changed my perspective and redefined my understanding of what life could be. My beliefs continued to unravel until I finally chose to break free from my religion in 2019.
For me, Box Boy is about abandoning my restrictive Mormon box, but for others it may be about no longer hiding their sexuality or gender identity, choosing to migrate to another country for a better life, making the bold choice to abandon an unfulfilling lifestyle, or leaving a toxic, abusive relationship.
Whatever your "box" may be, I hope that through Box Boy you can learn there is peace, joy and complete liberation on the other side of your box.
