Born again
All his life, Vladas has felt pushed away by his mother. To get her attention, he tries to commit suicide but fails and is found unconscious. He is then brought to the hospital. His grandfather, being the only person that Vladas feels loved by, warns him to cherish the life he has been given.
At night, Vladas runs away from home. He settles in a corridor, located in a block of flats. His new friends, Aurelijus and Raminta, convince Vladas to overcome his fear of needles by piercing his ear. Later on they are led to a lifestyle of crime and consume abusive substances until the inevitable happens – Aurelijus demands a concerned Vladas to inject heroin directly into the vein to save money. This leads Vladas into becoming a drug addict.
Vladas is found by a gang of thugs who try to kill him because of a box of tools that he had stolen. The leader of the gang calls Vladasʼs mother hoping to get a ransom, but she herself tells them to kill her son. Feeling lost, the men let Vladas go. Vladas climbs on the roof of a block of flats and considers to commit suicide again. As he turns his head, he sees a couple holding each other in the distance. Vladas resolves to come back to his mother thinking she might still love him. Yet, his mother does not let him in and tells Vladas to go kill himself. Vladas is feeling hopeless. He sits in the fields next to a cross and starts a conversation with his Consciousness. He feels comforted and is reminded about his beloved grandfather.
Vladas comes to his grandfather for help. His grandfather takes him to a rehabilitation center where Vladas is helped with his addiction and finds God. After some time, Vladas receives a letter from his mother. In the letter she describes how happy she is that his life has changed and congratulates him being “born again”.

Debora Gvazdikaitė is a young artist from Lithuania. She has recently completed her Bachelors (BA) degree in new media art at Vytautas Magnus University. Debora has experience as a videographer in filming and editing music videos, concerts and various cultural events. In her most recent creative project she debuted as a screenwriter and director of her first short film "Born again".
This film will always be special to me because for the first time, instead of wishing to film a movie, I finally took a leap of faith and initiated the process. I didn't have any important relations, a budget or even a script. It all started when I began looking for compelling stories online. As I was watching my seventh or eighth video of people sharing their trials and tribulations, I finally came across Vladas' testimony - I could momentarily visualize everything that he was talking about (unlike the other stories that I have heard). Then I along with the producer met Vladas in person and agreed to make this movie. Even though we started with zero budget and a small Sony camera, we managed to make our first short film.
As I had very little male influence growing up in a one parent home, telling this story from a man's perspective was especially challenging. I have also never experienced living in the streets neither have I used drugs. But then I realized that the theme and core of this movie is love and the lack thereof - that was the most important thing for me to understand. Of course, many hours were spent researching, talking to former drug addicts and especially to Vladas, to make the story as truthful and realistic as it can be. I am grateful for my team, the actors and everyone that contributed to this project - without them, this movie would not have happened. I wish for this short film to bring hope to those who need it.
