Started his career as and comicbook artist (Metal Hurlant, Heavy Metal and U-Comix). He designed film posters, book illustrations and over 120 record covers. He directed more than 60 music videos for bands like Kreator, Moonspell or Guano Apes. Debuted in 2004 with multiple award-winning feature film TEARS OF KALI, followed by MASKS (2011) and GERMAN ANGST (2014).
For me, Black. White. Red. was an experiment that began as an art project and whose outcome was decisively changed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Black. White. Red. is a balancing act of genre(s) and free association. The mirror of a dark soul in which the violence of real war is reflected. What was originally an 3part story-installation with numerous pop-culture references to the European genre cinema of the seventies and eighties turned more and more into the hellish journey of a male soul, who is tormented by the memories of a violent father who acts like a god (of war). Influenced by the disintegration of our familiar world order, associations and stark contrasts took over the linear narrative, combining opera music with techno, childhood poetry with images of violence. The editing process was like a journey whose outcome I didn't know in the beginning. I hope that the viewer will also go on a journey and not see the movie as a classic narrative, but experience like a dark dream.
* Note from the submitter. BLACK.WHITE.RED. is an exclusive production of the Swiss company Basel Dream & Vision AG, based in Basel. Original locations in Berlin, St. Petersburg, Kiev and Marseille were originally planned for the filming of BLACK.WHITE.RED. Due to the strict coronavirus restrictions in Germany and France, filming began in St. Petersburg in January 2022. Like many others, the entire film crew on location was caught off guard by the political crisis that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although Basel Dream & Vision AG believes that cultural bridges are more important than ever in these times, the prevailing political unrest unfortunately made it impossible to bring the film technical team, which was predominantly Russian, to Kiev, Berlin and Marseille. Filming was therefore limited to St. Petersburg, where it was completed as quickly as possible under the most difficult conditions.
