Beyond The Trails
On the venture of finding solitude, one young man, Osman, from the city comes alone to a remote mountainous-village on the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. As days and nights passes by, he starts getting acquainted with the villagers and their way of life. At day times, he visits the village and comes back to the harvest-hut at night. It seems like he is finding his solace living like this. For the villagers, farming is the only viable option for earning the livelihood. There is no cellphone network in the village and the nearest road for cars is a day away from the village. Nowadays some tourists come from the faraway cities to hike the mountain and watch the waterfalls. Some city people are investing money to build resort and cottages for the tourists. Osman feels the changing power-economic-dynamics on the hills these days. Osman has to leave the village as it’s time for him to be back at his usual reality. But he has this optimism that, the villagers and the mountain will protect itself by its own strength as it has done for hundreds of years.

Fazle Hasan Shishir is a Bangladeshi writer-director-producer from Ratherhood Initiatives, currently living in Busan, studying producing at the Busan Asian Film School. His filmography spans over a period of twelve years in various fields of practical filmmaking serving numerous short films, documentaries, commercials as a cinematographer, editor, director and producer.
His serious focus in producing started by his journey as a film curator and teacher that includes film like Mukuler Jadur Ghora (2021), Café Desire (2022), I Am a Chakma Filmmaker (2022), Forget Me Not (2023).
His fictional directorial debut started with Jhiripoth Periye (2023).
Beyond The Trails (2023) is a hybrid fiction which tends to portray the inter-cultural aspiration of a young man in the context of a particular national boundary. The film was shot in a way where the presence of the character in their original state is more meaningful than creating a pseudo-drama around their life. Bengalis as the majority of the land has a romantic feeling towards the lifestyle and the people of the hills. I tried to create a cultural amalgamation which goes beyond that. As the film is devoid of much hardcore drama, its essence lies in the flow of the time and space where the space stays larger than the characters.
