Between Waves

"Between Waves" is an inspiring film that explores the life of Francesca Clapcich, a professional offshore sailor, double-Olympian, America's Cup sailor, and the first Italian to win The Ocean Race, the iconic fully crewed race around the world. In this short film, we get to know Francesca and understand why she chose sailing as her life calling, embracing the unknown, and pursuing her inherent thirst for adventure. In nature, Francesca finds freedom, which empowers her to assert her unique voice and perspective.

As her professional story evolves Francesca forms an influential partnership with 11th Hour Racing to promote inclusivity and social environmentalism She becomes not only a guiding star within her work but also an inspiration for her young daughter and her community. This film demonstrates what can be achieved with determination, drive, and an unwavering spirit.

Luke Kaneb is a freelance photographer and filmmaker based in New England. He runs After Pangea Pictures and is a jack of all trades, working as a director, video editor, sound designer, and colorist. From childhood, he has cared for the outdoors. His work reflects his desire to cultivate care of wild places, and his range of work centers the human experience.

My love for filmmaking is rooted in people who inspire me, and Francesca Clapcich is no exception. Being invited into the life of this double Olympian and world-class offshore sailor has been an honor, resonating with me on a personal level. Our shared connection to the sea and mountains created an immediate bond. Like Francesca, I grew up with access to the ocean, which profoundly shaped my life. My years as an outdoor guide before becoming a filmmaker challenged my team building skills in navigating natural environments, thus deepening my respect for the intense team dynamics in Francesca’s racing.

This film celebrates Francesca’s connection to the ocean and mountains through sport, advocating for greater access to these experiences for all. It highlights the beauty and wonder of nature, with visuals that evoke a sense of awe. Intimate moments from Francesca’s life, such as her reflections on loss and her everyday family life, invite the viewer into her world. The film ultimately serves as a call to action, reminding us that everyone belongs in these natural spaces. Through Francesca’s emotional vulnerability and humility, the message is clear: love for the ocean and sport should be a shared and accessible experience for all.
