Director Biography - Jameil Player

Jameil Player
Director | Writer | Producer | Cinematographer | Founder of Visions Filmworks

Born in Leominster, Mass. and raised in Madison Heights, VA & Richmond, Virginia, Jameil Player is an independent filmmaker, writer, producer, cinematographer, and the founder of Visions Filmworks. Before stepping behind the camera, Jameil’s first creative love was hip-hop culture. Performing under the moniker Islam Rap God, he wrote and produced three hip-hop albums, developing a strong foundation in storytelling, rhythm, performance, and visual expression.

Jameil’s entry into filmmaking began in 2011 after a videographer he hired to shoot his first music video failed to show up. Determined to never be in that position again, he purchased his own HD camera and, with the help of a friend, directed his first music video for “That Raw, the lead single from his second album, The Sun Rises in the West. The video was warmly received, leading him to shoot music videos for himself and other artists throughout the Richmond and Tidewater areas.

In 2012, Jameil expanded into narrative filmmaking while helping his friend Ahmad promote his poetry book, The Winters of Love. He adapted two poems, Hood Movie and Ballin in the Fall of America, into short films. After encouragement from the lead actress, Jameil hosted a theatrical screening of Ballin in the Fall of America at Richmond’s historic Byrd Theatre, drawing nearly 200 attendees.

Over the next several years, Jameil continued building his body of work by directing and shooting music videos, commercials, reality-style content, and independent film projects. On June 27, 2015, he returned to the Byrd Theatre with the feature-length sequel Ballin in the Fall of America: When Everything Else Fails, which also drew nearly 200 people.

Jameil later wrote, directed, and produced WOBLEM: When Will Our Black Lives Ever Matter, continuing his focus on socially conscious storytelling and independent Black cinema. His recent work includes the short film Betrayal: A Slow Death, created for the 48 Hour Film Project, and his upcoming feature film The 8 God: For the Love of Hip-Hop, a romance and hip-hop drama that brings his filmmaking and music background together.

Through Visions Filmworks, Jameil continues to create stories rooted in culture, emotion, community, and independent artistry.
