Best Kept Secrets
When a cash-strapped English delivery rider inherits a bar in a forgotten Spanish backwater he aims to sell it for as much as possible, but winds up gaining something far more valuable.
SYNOPSIS:
All Ricky Branston wants to do is sell his inherited bar and get back to his home town, Manchester, but he quickly discovers that ‘Terry’s Tavern’ in Benileja, Spain, is worthless due to a recently built bypass. Undaunted, he comes up with a plan to boost footfall and make it saleable by organizing walking tours of the village.
With the help of attractive waitress Elisa (who thinks that Ricky is gay) and bar regulars Brenda, Daphne and Phil as volunteer tour guides, he launches ‘Terry’s Tours’. Unfortunately, word soon spreads that the tour is incredibly dull and ticket sales crash, until they liven up the tour guide script inventing several bizarre fallacies about the village. The tourists love it and the Benileja tour goes viral as it becomes more hysterical than historical.
With the neglected village slowly coming back to life, things are going well until Carlos, the Mayor of Benileja, tries to stop the tours, saying they’re turning Benileja into a laughing stock.
Determined to carry on, Ricky jumps all the Mayor’s hurdles and finally deduces that he is being manipulated by a shady businessman, Patrick Malone, who has taken advantage of his dire financial straits. Malone runs rival local walking tours and wants to eliminate the competition. But, while seeking hard evidence of corruption, Ricky discovers that Carlos desperately needs Malone’s kickbacks to pay for his severely disabled brother’s care home.
After failing to put a stop to the tours, Malone eventually tries to buy ‘Terry’s Tavern and Tours’, but Ricky rejects the offer when he realizes he’s in love with Elisa, and that Brenda, Daphne and Phil have become the family he’s never known.
During a final showdown with the abusive Malone, Ricky gifts Terry’s Tours to Carlos so he can get out from under Malone’s influence. He then announces that he’s staying in Benileja for good, reveals that he’s not gay, and proposes to Elisa.
