Philip Watts is an animator from Melbourne, Australia. He studied Film and Television at Australia’s Swinburne Film School (now VCA School of Film and Television.)
His 2013 film Bless You played at over 25 festivals and won Best Animated film at the 2013 Portland Film Festival. His 2014 film The Visitors won the Kids Jury Prize at the New York International Children's Film Festival. His 2017 film Superperson won Best Short (Age 7+) at the Barcelona Children's Film Festival. Also in 2017 Philip completed an animated segment on the number 7 for Sesame Street.
Philip also works as television editor, working on many TV shows including the internationally acclaimed Wentworth.
I’m fascinated by watching small dogs show no sense of their actual size and taking it upon themselves to bark ferociously at large dogs that could eat them for breakfast. This placed an image in my mind - a small dinosaur roaring at a large tyrannosaurus rex. What would happen next? This evolved into a tale of outer strength versus inner strength... and of berries that make dinosaurs fart and burp. What evolves is an unlikely friendship.
It took me some experimenting before I settled on the look of the film. The background elements are hand-drawn with coloured markers. The characters are animated in a digital paper cutout style. Although the film was animated on a computer I was keen to employ an organic stop-motion aesthetic.
