Before the Spotlight journeys behind the scenes of the dynamic Dauntless Movement Crew, diving into the lives of three of its standout members, Sienna, Chris and Manu. In a tough industry defined by fierce competition, fleeting opportunities and constant audition cycles, these performers are faced with uncertainty. To challenge them further, the risk of financial instability is significant in a high demanding economy. Yet, their passion grows stronger, fuelled by the support from the community. But what makes the risk worth it?

Director Biography - Angelina Jezebel Boland

Angelina Boland is the director of the short documentary, “Before the Spotlight.” She comes to the project with exceptional organisational and creative leader skills gained from producing various short drama films, including “Red Handed” (2025) and “Ballad of Him and Her” (2025).

Director Statement

Before the Spotlight is an Australian poetic short documentary inspired by the director’s deep connection to expressive movement and the personal sacrifices made in pursuit of passion. Angelina further wanted to raise awareness of the reality behind this competitive industry as the hardships experienced are not commonly portrayed through media.

The film was created by a dedicated team of 5 emerging filmmakers, with a collective vision that explores the emotional and physical realities behind the art of performance.

With the teams personal connection to dance and the creative arts, each crew member was able to bring something unique to the production. Ultimately, creating a heartfelt story that can be reflected from each perspective and one that resonates with all who have chased their dreams against all odds.
