BECOMING

BECOMING transports us to an otherworldly realm where an angelic chorus of synth and suggestion underscores an ever- changing landscape that is simultaneously fixed at the micro - the savage and purposeful dance of creation and destruction and the macro - the unimaginably vast and unwittingly beautiful scale of an unthinking and an unknowable universe swirling towards it's next stage.

Director Biography - Shelley Hopkins

London based independent filmmaker and video editor, Shelley Hopkins, specialises in experimental films and music videos. The running theme in her work is the synergy of music and moving image and exploring the correspondence between the micro (everyday substance) and the (archaic or cosmic) macro. Shelley uses microscopes, macro lenses and 8mm film stock to experiment with substances from her mini laboratory.

Shelley's interest in contemporary music also comes to play a role here, as the videos have explored "sound substance' not only as ambient recording, but also to augmenting pieces of music. Shelley has collaborated with a number of musicians including The Heavy North, The Cheating Hearts and sHeFf_ pOLy. Her music video BINAURAL GLASS, in collaboration with Carly Paradis was screened at ASFF and WOEFF and has received several accolades, including selections as finalist, semi-finalist. nominee and an honourable mention.

Director Statement

BECOMING is a collaboration with Swedish artist and composer Tomas Nordmark. He describes the track as 'in a sense a celebration of the philosophy of transformation and the struggles posed by going through a process of change.' Partially inspired by Mark Fisher's 'The Weird and Eerie' BECOMING is 'dark and dense yet hopeful and intriguing.'

BECOMING is one of my most directly accessible pieces, exploring themes of change, growth, possibility and rebirth. I aim to unite the closely observed experience of change and syncretism from our base organic selves with the colossal cosmic tidal forces that stretch our perception and the little breaths and heart beats of our tiny beautiful and ever- changing possibilities.
