Beautiful Storm
Beautiful Storm is a cinematic tapestry of weather and climate-imagery gathered across decades of patient watching. Storm fronts roll, light fractures, wind and water dance across land and sea. Beneath it all flows an original score by the filmmaker, guiding the viewer through a choreography of movement, tension and release. The result is a hypnotic journey into the living heart of the storm.
The film echoes the spirit of the coffee table book Beautiful Storm, which Yanni published in 2020, featuring thirty years of storm-chasing photography along the coastline of Victoria, Australia. Yet the film’s origins lie elsewhere.
It began with music.
Writing under the pseudonym Bluzoid, Yanni composed a piano piece for a volunteer dance-film commission. The filmmakers chose another score, but the music lingered. He expanded the piece into something more orchestral, joined by musician friends Natalie Parker (tin whistle, flute and trumpet) and Sally Carter (violin), whose melodies helped bring the composition to life.
For years the music waited - unanchored, searching for its image. Eventually Yanni found it in his own archive: three decades of storm photography and ten years of moving footage.
Slowly, the elements aligned - sound, image, memory - capturing both a lifelong passion for storm chasing and the growing drama of a changing climate.
Beautiful Storm is not a traditional narrative film. There are no actors, no dialogue - only music, image, and the quiet arc of a three-act journey through nature’s most powerful theatre.

My journey in the natural environment began with a profound realization of the interconnectedness between human activities and the health of our planet. This realization sparked a lifelong commitment to driving positive change and fostering environmental resilience. Throughout my academic, professional and artistic endeavours, I have sought opportunities to champion local sustainability initiatives and amplify the voices of marginalized communities disproportionately affected by environmental degradation.
