Beats Per Minute
How far will you go to grab your dream? Will yours be talent wasted, or will you seize your moment to shine? The tone of “Beats Per Minute” is edgy raw, think “8-Mile,” as we follow TRU, a big wave surfer and gifted deejay, whose idol is EL DIABLO, the king of the EDM scene. But Tru is stuck performing at a silly Mai Tai
bar in Honolulu, where he meets CASPER, a charming Dutch shmoozer wearing an El Diablo jacket, who claims to be on the tour. When Casper sees Tru’s talent, and invites him to Amsterdam to chase his dreams, Tru arrives to have his wallet and money stolen by a pickpocket in the Red Light, and then finds Casper is full of shit.
Penniless Tru is thrown into Casper’s gang of wild young Euro EDM artists who ghost write, perform deejay slots at Amsterdam’s Club Zoom, and resent this fish out of water who they call “Hawaii Five-O.” But one night when the decks crash, Tru blows the crowd away with impromptu beat boxing on an old acoustic guitar. This gets the attention of SILVER, an emotionally closed off artist rep, instrumental in discovering El Diablo, and fell in love with him, only to be left at the wedding alter.
When Tru runs into trouble playing a shady club owned by dangerous Dutch Moroccans, who don’t appreciate his original talent and throw Tru’s ass out on the street, it is Silver who bravely distracts the doorman, as Tru fights his way back inside to grab his rig, and a friendship begins. Silver takes on Tru, makes it clear this is strictly business, but things change as wild adventures ensue, booking slots at various clubs, and chasing music moguls in search of the big break.
Darkness falls when Tru finds the Pickpocket who stole his wallet. He beats him up, and grabs his knapsack as a consolation prize, only to discover it’s full of ecstasy, which belongs to the Dutch Moroccan gangsters. Casper promises to take care of returning the drugs, but pulls another con, and Tru is drawn into this deadly world, which threatens to ruin his chance of a lifetime -- El Diablo has offered Tru the opportunity to battle his idol on opposing stages at a huge Euro festival. Our hero uses lessons Silver has taught him about reaching an audience, as he boldly takes his one shot, and triumphantly earns the respect of his idol and a legion of fans.
