Battle of Blood: The Legend of Arhuanran
A Throne. A Betrayal. A Battle that Shaped a Kingdom. Step back into a time when warrior kings ruled and empires rose through blood and strategy. Our new documentary uncovers the untold rivalry that split the Benin Kingdom—starting with a stolen birthright and ending in the legendary Battle of Blood.
This story takes us back to a pivotal time in the history of the Benin Kingdom, a period marked by the reign of powerful warrior Obas (kings). These great rulers led conquests, expanding the kingdom into a formidable empire that reached far and wide. During this time, the Benin Kingdom engaged in extensive trade with Europeans, solidifying its influence and wealth.
At the heart of this story lies one of the kingdom's most legendary rivalries—a conflict between two Benin princes and the two largest towns in the kingdom. This rivalry traces its origins to a moment of betrayal when a newly born child, destined to inherit the throne, was unjustly stripped of his birthright to rule. This documentary delves deep into the tale, exploring both the historical and archaeological significance of these events.
Through interviews with key stakeholders in the Benin Kingdom, we uncover the legacy of this rivalry and its impact on the kingdom's history. We visit the original location of the infamous 'Battle of Blood,' where this conflict reached its peak, and explore other significant sites that provide insight into this monumental chapter of Benin's past.
Combining oral history, expert analysis, and archaeological findings, this documentary sheds light on the rich heritage, political struggles, and cultural legacy of the Benin Kingdom, a civilization renowned for its strength, artistry, and resilience.
