Bathtub, Birds and Chopin

This experimental animated short film expresses a brief wisp of a woman's thoughts in a bathtub, which through Chopin's piano melody becomes a soulful message of intercommunication between mankind and nature.

Bathtub, bird and Chopin are three seemingly unrelated words that come together in this 13-minute animated short film, where the people in the bathtub and the birds and other living creatures in nature are organically linked in Chopin's stunning piano music. The creators omitted all language and descriptions in the animated film, and instead used a unique visual presentation angle, a multi-media mix of animation methods, creative and exquisite art design and sound design. The theme of the movie is to express the expectation and longing of human beings for the friendly coexistence and integration between themselves and nature, and at the same time to express a kind of worry about the current state of affairs.

Director Biography - Joe Chang

Joe Chang is an award-winning Chinese-born Canadian animation director. He studied at Lu-Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China and Tama Art University Graduate school in Tokyo, Japan. The animated short the Chinese Violin (2000) was his first animated film with the National Film Board of Canada. His most recent work is animated short Bathtub, Birds and Chopin (2025). In 2002, he founded the animation major at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China. Currently, Joe as an artist, independent filmmaker lives in Vancouver, Canada.
