Bar and Girl
“There used to be some, mostly underground,
Then there were many, too much fun.
Now there are very few, disappearing too fast.”
The story of the dwindling number of spaces dedicated to lesbian nightlife in New York City is also a memoir of preservation through memory and storytelling, tracking the traces of iconic queer spaces.

With an academic background in anthropology and film theory, Ragini Nath developed a keen interest in documentary filmmaking. She decided she would rather be making films than just reading about them. She sees the visual manifestation of film and photography as an extension of the existing narrative of everyday life. Her work is a medley of personal musings, hitchhikes and exploration of the ever diverse human condition.
'Bar and Girl' has been a very special choice as my debut film.
Being a Queer woman from India, I moved to New York in 2017 when LGBTQ rights were still considered illegal in my country. Trailing through the queer women nightlife of New York and through the memoirs of the lost brick and motor lesbian spaces, "Bar and Girl" was about experiencing a history that is yet to occur in my country.
