Born in Taoyuan and raised in Kaohsiung, Hungyu Kuo began his creative journey while studying English literature and linguistics at National Kaohsiung Normal University. There, he produced, wrote, and directed works including "Overact," a musical that premiered at the Kaohsiung Cultural Center in 2019. In 2021, his two short films, "Study Hard" and "Banana Kills," marked the true start of his career as a filmmaker.
"Banana Kills" is a horror short that explores the internal conflict between a man and his cravings. As the fifth version of "Banana," the film represents a four-year journey into one of the most personal struggles a man can face. It all started with a rotten banana and a bottle of fake blood on a dorm room bookshelf in Yiqing. Inspired by the leftover props from my earlier shorts, "An Appointment" and "Nightmares," I set out to create a passion project using whatever I had available.
The original idea was simply a sex dream gone wrong, but over time, it evolved into a deeper exploration of patriarchy, shame, and self-control. Only after confronting my own fears could I admit the truth: my addiction to masturbation and the guilt that remains from sexual dreams. I realized those nightmares needed an outlet. That’s how Banana Kills was born: a confession, a reckoning, and an exorcism all in one.
