Mughal Tamasha, a unique Folk Theatre evolved towards later part of 18th Century in Bhadrak region of Odisha in the eastern coast of India. By that time, Odisha had already been ruled by the Afghans, the Mughals and followed by the Marathas. And, Bhadrak was the gateway of these alien rulers to Odisha. Distinguished poet and playwright Banshi Ballav Goswami was the creator of this unusual form of rural theatre. Entertainment apart, the main objective of this folk play was to create communal harmony amongst the oppressed Hindus and Muslims and, also to ridicule the lapses of Mughal administration through a series of farcical enactments, songs, dances and music. Himansu Sekhar Khatua
An alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune , Mr. Himansu Sekhar Khatua delved into film making soon after his professional education with his maiden venture “Shoonya Swaroopa” (Contours of the Void) , a feature film that received the Best Feature Film in Odia at the 44th National Film Awards, 1997; five important State Awards including Best Feature Film and Best Director’s Awards and featured at a number of International Film Festivals abroad including Rotterdam International Film Festival followed by “Kathantara” (Another Story ) that also bagged Eight major State Awards as well as theBest Feature Film in Odia at the 53rd National Film Awards, 2006 and graced numerous International Film Festivals all over the World. His third Feature film “Matira Bandhan “(The Inheritance), based on the short story “Trunk of Ganesha” by the famous poet and author Dr. Jayant Mahapatra, despite being stuck at the CBFC for reasons other than aesthetics was highly acclaimed at Mumbai International Film Festival (MAMI) and Bangalore International Film Festival etc.
Equally notable are his Tele serial, based on literary classic “Prayaschita”, a novel by the doyen of Odia Literature, Fakir Mohan Senapati and the telefilm “Abhishapta Jaraayu” are considered benchmarks in literary adaptation produced by Doordarsan.
Besides the feature films, his Documentaries and Short films on varied burning issues have immense depth and analytical prowess that has earned him critical acclaim from various quarters.
Notwithstanding filmmaking per se, Mr. Khatua continues to don the mantle of academics and administrative responsibilities when he joined BPFTIO, the State film school in Odisha. A number of his students are working in the film Industry all over India. Presently, he is the Chief Executive Officer and looking after School of Film and Media Sciences, School of Fashion Technology and School of Mass Communication at the globally-known KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.
That apart, Mr. Khatua was nominated as a Jury Member In many State and National Film Festivals including National Film Awards and is deeply engrossed in propagating film culture and social causes.
