Director Biography - Tarun Jain

Tarun Jain's career has been punctuated by a myriad of projects and the creation of four impactful short films.

One of his standout works, "Mother (Amma Meri)," delves into the agrarian crises gripping Haryana, India. Premiering at the prestigious Tampere Film Festival in Finland in 2018, an event recognised by the Oscars, it garnered widespread acclaim. This poignant piece went on to captivate audiences at renowned festivals like IFFI in Goa and MIFF in Mumbai, accumulating an impressive array of six awards across various categories.

In another significant endeavour, Tarun crafted "Kaala," a deeply resonant short film inspired by the racial tensions faced by Africans in Delhi during 2016 and 2017. Its excellence was duly acknowledged as it clinched the title of Best Short Film at the esteemed Cinequest Film and VR Festival in the USA, earning a place in the 2020 Oscars.

Adding to his repertoire, Tarun served as the 2nd unit director and associate director for the acclaimed web series 'Kohrra,' which made its mark on Netflix in 2023. The series quickly gained recognition, securing a position among the top 5 web series on Netflix in India for the year.

His latest endeavour, "Ballad of the Mountain," weaves a captivating narrative set against the backdrop of Uttarakhand's foothills, chronicling the dreams of an outcast aspiring to reach the stars as an astronaut.

Director Statement

Even after centuries, the caste system still holds prominence to our community in large, depriving millions of people and leaving very little scope for the lower caste to grow and prosper. It not just robs them of their present but also takes away the numerous opportunities that would come their way, helping them uplift their lives in the near future. The basic right to free education, freedom of speech, and choosing a profession of their choice or inter-caste marriage are all compromised. Over the years, it has weakened their backbones, leaving the low-caste communities in a state of extreme poverty and hopelessness. Thus, making them vulnerable to child labor and early marriages.

The story is inspired by my personal exposure along with my long stays in various parts of Uttarakhand. What inspired me to make this film came from the father’s journey. Having to look after 12 members in his family, my father, a child himself, worked hard to make ends meet. He began to work at a very early age when my grandfather was diagnosed with severe depression. He recalls how going to school and learning the little he could make a big difference to his decision-making abilities and this motivated him to leave his village and arrive in the big city of Delhi. Education did change the course of his life, and his ability to remain tenacious and the attitude to never give up too helped him lead a better life. His decision not just changed his life but touched many around him. His zeal to succeed was so high that failure was never an option.

Education is the most powerful tool we can offer to our children. It is something no one can take away from them, nor is it something that should be denied. According to the Constitution (86th Amendment Act) 2002 of India, every child should be given free and compulsory education between the ages of 6 and 14. Then, why do we have so many uneducated youths looking for employment without any clue? What has the caste system got to do with education, or is it simply the fear of being chased out when the low and the poor receive education and succeed like the others? As the Tibetan proverb states, “A child without education is like a bird without wings.”.

It is important to underscore the importance of education, especially in regions where it remains inaccessible due to religious and societal barriers. I envision a place where every child can receive an education, free from concerns about caste, color, or creed.

Through Diya’s unwavering determination, we aim to inspire a collective thought that makes us rethink our choices, questions ingrained biases, and compels society to support education for every child.

“Ballad of the Mountain" is a story of resilience, courage, and hope. It is an invitation to confront the uncomfortable truths that persist in our society and an opportunity to rewrite the narrative for countless girls who deserve a chance to learn, grow, and flourish.
