‘Backroom Happenings’ (2022) is an experimental, psychological horror short about a conspiracy theorist who finds himself trapped in an endless corridor of empty rooms. With this short I wanted to explore how empty spaces can bring out an unsettling but weirdly nostalgic feeling. Also, I wanted to create a strong sense of overstimulation within the main character as he becomes more obsessed with ‘The Backrooms.’

Director Statement

‘Backroom Happenings’ (2022) is an experimental, psychological horror short about a conspiracy theorist who finds himself trapped in an endless corridor of empty rooms. With this short I wanted to explore how empty spaces can bring out an unsettling but weirdly nostalgic feeling. Also, I wanted to create a strong sense of overstimulation within the main character as he becomes more obsessed with ‘The Backrooms.’

In order to make the concept convincing and intense, we needed to approach the film in a rather experimental way: This film was achieved by creating a virtual set and rotoscoping the actor and props onto the CGI shots. It was challenging given the small crew and even smaller bugdet, but was accomplished by the hard work of everybody involved.
