When Dave and Jeremy told me about this script, we were at my childhood home, which would serendipitously become BACK HOME’s location. Directing this story became visceral to me: a tale of brothers’ discord playing out in the landscape of my own sibling tension, family bonding and strife, our successes and our faux pas’. Heck, my own parents even make a cameo.
“Back home” is not just a location, but a feeling. A feeling that some are desperate for, some are running from, and some don’t realize they’re lost in. We set out to not only explore two estranged brothers grappling with a death in the family, but to explore the friction caused by the notion that “back home” isn’t the same for Cam and Spencer, and what happens when that contention is bigger than any house could hold.
