Ever since Georgia Whitfield was a child, animation was a part of her life. After moving from England to America in middle school, animation and storytelling became something special. It allowed her to bond with the people around her. Her passion for it is what drove her to attend Savannah College of Art and Design. While there, she got diagnosed with a chronic illness. Even though she was in hospital frequently, she didn’t let that stop her from being creative. She continued to push through and was able to direct a group of amazing artists during her senior year.
I directed Brew Who as an ode to the younger me. In grade school, I was never as good as my peers at academic subjects. It wasn’t until I found art that I realized my talents are different than others. It took me a while to accept this, but once I did, my love for myself grew enormously. I decided to represent this through the clumsy but determined witch Ingrid. It was important to me to not only drive home a message through the film but also to entertain viewers. The fantasy setting allowed me to create whimsical, funny slapstick between Ingrid and her creation, Gooburg. I wanted a saturated and cartoony look for the film to go along with the curiosity and wonder we experience as adolescents. Working with the crew was an amazing collaborative process. We all included parts of ourselves in the characters and the world around them. Getting to make this film with the amazingly talented crew is an experience I am very grateful for. I hope to bring all of my knowledge and experience directing this film to other future endeavors.
