BREANTA
In 1828, in a small village on the Calabrian coast, Lina's life is shattered when the men of a nobleman kill her husband, who had intervened to defend her from an abuse of power. Forced to flee by boat with her young son, she loses him at sea during a storm. Stranded on the Cilentan coast, she finds herself alone and aimless. She gathers the courage to start anew, driven by thoughts of revenge. Meanwhile, the southern Italian populations, particularly in Cilento, are constantly
exploited by the royals who, in agreement with the nobility, impose taxes and restrictions. Lina meets revolutionaries fighting for the constitution against the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The ideas of freedom and justice become her creed.
She joins them, learns to fight, and transforms into a different woman: fearless, courageous, revolutionary. She returns to Calabria and avenges herself by killing the nobleman and all his men. She then returns to Cilento and fights with the rebels
in the uprisings of 1828 and 1848. After 20 years, she finds her son, who has become a rebel alongside the brigand Carmine Crocco. Together with him, she continues the battle. Unfortunately, in 1863, their ideas of freedom vanish: the Pica law is proclaimed, which quickly exterminates all the rebels and forces them to flee the territories. The two escape by boat towards the ship that will take them to America, but they are pursued by the king's soldiers. The woman leaps onto the pursuers' boat and blows it up, giving her son a clear
path to reach the ship and save himself. Lina finds death but also the long-desired freedom. Meanwhile, the ship sails away from Italy, with the son on deck, tears in his eyes as he looks at the horizon, and the American flag appears.
