ANONYMOUS MOVING IMAGES
The Irene Cara Story
When she sued her label for unpaid royalties in the mid-80s, she was labeled "difficult" and found herself suddenly unable to get airplay or film roles. She eventually won a $1.5 million settlement in 1993, but the prime years of her mainstream career had been spent in courtrooms instead of recording studios.
Her music stopped playing on the radio, and film offers dried up.
The company that famously failed to pay Irene Cara was Network Records, led by record executive Al Coury.
God forbid you ask for what's rightfully yours.
After the verdict, Network Records and Al Coury declared bankruptcy. Her lawyers later stated that they believed the company had funneled its assets into other shell corporations to avoid paying the judgment, but they were unable to prove it in court.
13 years.
