Betsy

Betsy is a satirical take on the way society deals with homelessness by using empty platitudes that ultimately give way to cutthroat capitalism. After preparing for an upcoming open house, a real estate agent (Betsy) sees a homeless man shivering in the cold on her drive home. As she reflects upon the state of the homelessness crisis, Betsy struggles with her own complicity before deciding to take action in a way that seems to radically contradict her stated values, mirroring the ethos of modern day America.

Director Statement

During Covid, I noticed a strange feeling that began to permeate throughout Los Angeles as homeless encampments began to proliferate throughout the city. As these encampments grew in size and number, they seemed to draw out a dark side of society that perhaps has always existed beneath the gleaming surface of picket fences and manicured lawns. Betsy is a response that tries to lay bare that dark element. It's meant to provoke.
