Director Statement

BABY is based on a true story. It is about my ex (a bi-polar depressive musician) who’s dad died 3 days after I met him, while I was in the house, meeting him for the first time. I had been with my boyfriend for 2 weeks at this time.

I watched his body get removed and my lover fall apart. BABY is about my experience of grief; outside looking in. The grief we absorb from those we love deeply - I have never heard this talked about. I certainly was not prepared for it, and 8 years later I am still not sure I have ever shaken it off.

Over the course of one house party, I was able to capture and distill the essence of the whole feature, including the surreal moments.

The real story took place in Melbourne, Australia, but our backdrop is a grey London; our majestic shit hole. A depressed council flat sits like an ash tray for the brightly lit youth of today to be put out in.I wanted to bring the story home - and also remove it from the exact truth of the story to protect those in it.

Repressed emotions, trauma bonding, explorations of masculinity, toxic love, love, fatherlessness, loss, grief and finally a sense of healing through release all are revealed in these few minutes on screen.

I held him most nights like a baby as he sobbed into my bones.I didn’t know what to do, except do anything for him.

I gave a year of my life trying to fill the hole his father left in him; I had never seen grief like this before. No one had told me how to deal with it. No one teaches you how to prepare for death. There is no school. No online course. There is no handbook. We learn about emotions through art. This is why making art has been the only thing that has made sense to me.

This is part of my healing process and I hope it helps others find theirs.
