Maulana Latif Hanafi is a young film director from Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. As of 2025, he is 17 years old. He is a student as well as an emerging filmmaker currently studying at SMKN 1 Wonosari, where he has developed a strong interest in directing.
Latif’s journey in the visual arts began at the age of 12, when he started creating short videos. Since then, he has dedicated himself to exploring and developing his skills in filmmaking. This dedication is reflected in his first film, Athirat, which has achieved success at several festivals, including winning Best Film at FFPJ 2024 and SEWONDERLAN 2024, as well as being officially selected at IMAC 2025 and ReelOzInd! 2025.
Atirath was born from my personal experience of entering a new environment that demanded achievement while leaving little room for individual desire to be heard. Instead of growth, I found myself gradually losing control over my own choices.
Through visual language and bodily symbolism, the film represents an inner struggle of a person who is bound, pulled in multiple directions, and forced to conform to expectations beyond themselves. The figure dressed in white tied and wounded reflects my own inner state: confused, pressured, and disconnected from my inner voice. Meanwhile, the dancer in yellow embodies hope and the desire to remain optimistic, even within a restrictive situation.
Atirath is not merely a story about resistance against a system, but about the courage to engage in dialogue with oneself. It explores how one attempts to understand their limitations, accept their wounds, and slowly release the bonds that have shaped them.
For me, freedom does not always mean confronting oppression head-on, but reclaiming dignity and choice amid pressure. This film is an inner journey toward returning to the most honest voice the voice of oneself.
