A simple Man
The past and the present connect and vibrate with urgency in this brief yet powerful collaboration between a Black Southern artist and a Brazilian film-making duo. Shot in 2015, before Covid and before BLM, the clip portrays a solitary figure, Sammy, in a bleak urban landscape. The rusty gates and barbed wire are softened by the the visceral melody of a negro spiritual fortelling the clouds of white supremacy ever present in the American landscape. Images blend to reveal a mosaic. Varied fashion ensembles, a melodic cry of pain, Black fingers scraping an unforgiving wall. It is haunting and brutal, yet brimming with possibility.
